Scarcity of water will inflate grain prices, which will affect stakeholders that
depend on grain availability, including animal agriculture producers. The costs
of many foods will rise, with meat production perhaps the most significantly
affected. Cattle production requires 7 kilograms of grain for 1 kilogram of live
weight; pork and poultry are slightly more efficient at 4 to 1 and 2 to 1,
respectively (Brown, 2001). Alternative sources of protein, such as
aquaculture or plant-based meat substitutes may become more commonplace.
