In areas of low groundwater tables, precipitation-fed lakes and streams lose
water into their aquifers. When surface water is diverted for alternate uses,
the quantity of water available for natural aquifer recharge decreases. With
less water entering the aquifer, the water table in the aquifer is likely to
fall, leading to the problems associated with groundwater overdraft
(USGS, 1995).
