Producer Payments

Agricultural producers receive almost 75 billion dollars annually in farm subsidies from the federal government. A portion of this money is earmarked specifically for irrigation water, reducing the incentive for producers to adopt better water-management practices. Some subsidies go to the production of surplus crops, which then must be bought back from the producers as price supports. A re-examination of the funding level and intended effects of producer payments can help provide for national water use efficiency.
