Water-Thrifty Crops

Water lost through inefficiencies in irrigation is one area in which improvements are possible. Another option is to decrease the baseline amount of water that crops require for growth, as explored in Chapter 2. Some biotechnology companies are looking to do just that, by modifying stomata in the plant leaves in the hopes of reducing transpiration (water loss through evaporation) (Postel, 1999). Further research in this area could be fruitful.
