Pollution Concentration

In times of depleted surface flow, nutrient contributions from both pointsource and non-pointsource polluters are increased, relative to streamflow. The decreased dilution of nutrients results in a greater likelihood of algal blooms, dissolved oxygen depletion, and other negative effects associated with eutrophication (IEE, 2001). Higher nutrient concentrations also contribute to increased treatment costs for downstream municipal drinking water systems.
